Fun with shutter speeds while dancing in a parking lot. . .

And Marching Illini comes to a hault. . .My friend took this picture at one of the last games and I like how it conveys the bond of our section.

Ideation for Denti-Vision Satelite. . .

A couple weeks ago I was playing in the band at a volleyball game where the anti-chief group showed up. It was amazing to see how the rest of the crowd responded to them. Cops even had to get involved and took the anti-chief boy on the megaphone away. The band was purposely instructed to play 3 in 1 with no pauses and to segue into war chant directly, taking away any opportunity for the protesters to be heard. Personally I love the chief and have a hard time understanding how the he could be anything but honorable. I have been persuaded greatly by the band though and knowing the chiefs personally adds to my support. This picture was taken by my mom at one of the past football games.

On the quad this week they had the annual "Don't burn in Hell. Be saved from Jesus." First off, I hate the idea of them trying to get people to believe by using a scare tactic and second of all why do they have to publicize themselves so loudly. They had at least five huge banners scattered over the quad. To many other religions, such as the Jewish, this is probably insulting to them. There are plenty of good people on this Earth and only a small percentage are Christians. If people feel that there purpose in life is to "save" others they should keep it to their close friends and family, not to the entire, extremely diverse campus.

Final resolution. . .

In these two layouts the photos need to look as they are integrated into the page better. Right now they look like they were just plotted on. In addition, I think the little spects of little decay need to be echoed more throughout the composition. The transparent box behind the text on page one may be too distracting as well.

Playing with the idea of decay in photoshop. . .

The story "Denti-Vision Satellite" conveyed an overwhelming emotion. The story's subject matter kept changing and circling as the character's brain was in a mix of distraction between his job, the contest, sex life, patients, children, music, etc. Tension was high as the characters life was in a slow decay. Here are a few examples of the photos and scans I took to focus on these concepts. The female and male parts of electrical cords represent the sexual tension as well as the knots and interlacing of them. The pearls, no longer in their pure white represent the decay in the main character's relationships including his wife. The charcoal was me just playing around with an interesting texture that may be able to be used.

After all the suggestions were taken to heart, here is my final DVD solution.

Both of these designs are unsuccessful because of their lack of visual hierarchy creating an overwhelming and unappealing visual.

Instead of using many opacity layers, I was going to add these cubes to still support my chaotic concept, but to have more visual organization. hmmm. . .Systematic chaos? A challenge for me to face.

This design is a bit more successful but still needs work. Many class suggestions included to take out the numbers, brighten the swirl in the creamer, create a bigger connection with the pi symbol and the rest of the design, and to not use right justified text.

Some starting points for the Pi DVD design

The golden rectangle

These sketches were used to try to figure out the different dimensions of each box in the golden rectangle. The goal was to create the golden rectangle using different photos from the film. I didn't want the golden rectangle to take up the whole front of the cover though, so what was big in comparison to other blocks was actually quite small, resulting in only 2 of pictures actual visible. This idea was then set aside.

This scan was used in the coffee cup design.

Marching Illini Roadtrip 2005!
Destination: Ohio State University
It is tradition for each section in the band to make t-shirts for this occasion. For the mellophones, our logo is a cartoon platypus. As a section we came up with the idea of our platypus eating a buckeye like yoshi does in Mario Nintendo. Me being the only one with artistic ability in the section, they came to me to draw it. . .

It wasn't till I was at Assembly Hall recently that someone pointed out to me that there was an "11" created in the negative space on either side of the "T" in the Big Ten logo. It reminded me of the Fed-Ex design we looked at in class with the hidden arrow. At first I was confused by the purpose of the "11," but then remembered that there are 11 teams in our conference. I think that the Big Ten logo is a good example of the creative usage of negative space.
