GOUDY OLD STYLE. . .This type face, created by Frederic W Goudy in 1915, refers to the Renaissance and was influenced by letter forms carved on classical Roman architecture. It is considered conservative and traditional, utilizing serifs to help the human eye move from letter to letter. Because of its readability, it replaced a blackletter style which is described as gothic.

UNIVERS. . .Much more simple than Goudy Old Style, this type face uses the same line weight all the way through creating straight vertical and horizontal lines. No one is quite sure of the inspiration for the block like type face, but it was created by Adrian Frutiger.

At first glance, I was attracted to Univers because I like to think of myself as laid back and easily amused, characteristics I consider synonyms for simple. But after thinking about objects that reflect me, Goudy Old Style seem to be the better fit. I love making music and it has always been and still is a huge influential part of my life. Since second grade I have been playing instruments from the piano to the trumpet. In high school, in addition to art, music took over my life because I was in every ensemble possible. Today, I have the honor of being a member of the Marching Illini playing the mellophone as well as participating in U of I's concert bands where I play the French horn. Goudy Old style reflects the passion I have for music with it's more flowing appearance because of the serifs. In addition, the fluid movement of Goudy Old Style reflects the way music flows from note to note. Even looking at sheet music, dynamics and other musical elements are usually printed in a cursive type face.

In addition to picking Goudy Old style, I choose to use upper case because I am adventurous, strong, and daring. These are bold characteristics that can not be reflected in lower case.
